If you have just turned 18, or will soon, you may in many cases start receiving money from the public sector. For example, you might begin an education and receive student grants (SU), or move out from home and become eligible for housing benefits.
The public authorities need a bank account where they can deposit your money. This is called your NemKonto.
Private companies can also pay money into your NemKonto. For example, if you have a part-time job, you and your employer may agree that your salary will be paid into your NemKonto.
You have to decide which account to use as your NemKonto. You do not automatically get one. You can ask your bank to register a NemKonto for you, or you can do it yourself via NemKonto’s self-service.
You need your MitID to log in to the self-service. After that, you can enter the account details for the account you want as your NemKonto.
If you use the self-service, you will receive a physical letter by post containing a code that you must use to activate your NemKonto. It may take some time for the letter to arrive, so the fastest way is to have your bank register your NemKonto for you. You can read more about the letter here.
